A great spot to begin is simply in each closet. Examine all the clothing and get rid of any pieces that don’t fit or that haven’t been worn. It is also a good plan to go through your kids’ toys and do away with items that are no longer being used. A very good rule of thumb is that if an article has not been used or worn in the last 2 years, it really probably should go. You can donate your unwanted things or sell them. Make sure to clean your pantry and freezer or fridge and thrash any expired foods. As you eliminate clutter, it is also a very good suggestion to get rid of documents that you no longer want. Some documents should certainly be shredded if they contain personal information. Curtains should be cleaned once a year.

Depending on the fabric, drapes may need to be dry-cleaned. Other drapes, particularly those made from cotton, can just be washed in the washing machine.

One other thing that is often missed is the light fixtures. For each chandelier or lamp, remove the cover or globe. The detachable parts may be washed with dish soap and any other area can be wiped with a damp cloth.

The dishwasher is also missed when spring cleaning. Even if it is used constantly, it too needs to have a yearly cleaning. In order to get your dishwashing machine sparkling clean, put a cup of vinegar in a dishwasher-safe bowl on the top shelf and run a single cycle. Next, sprinkle some baking soda in the bottom of the machine and run another cycle. Vinegar and baking soda cleanse the dishwashing machine while also giving it a fresh scent.

Cleaning the freezer or refrigerator coils is another yearly job that really helps keep your appliance in perfect condition. Before anything else, disconnect the refrigerator and pull it from the wall. To remove dust from the coils, use the brush accessory on your vacuum, or use a stiff brush and vacuum or sweep as you go.

Starting off with these simple jobs will help you kick off spring cleaning and you will be well on your way to making your residence shine. These painless tasks will not only make your place appear a whole lot better, but will also help your appliances and furnishings last even longer.
